Overview

The Go2CHANGE Training School brought together researchers, practitioners, and early-career professionals from across Europe in Bamberg (Germany) to explore innovative approaches for addressing climate change challenges in cultural heritage contexts.

Throughout the programme, participants engaged in a combination of expert lectures, hands-on workshops, digital tools training, field visits, and collaborative group work. Using the Bamberg UNESCO World Heritage Site as a living laboratory, participants analysed climate-related risks affecting different heritage districts and developed strategies to enhance their resilience.

The activities focused on the full climate action cycle, covering climate risk and vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and mitigation strategies. Participants explored climate hazards, heritage sensitivities, exposure and adaptive capacity, while working with digital tools and data-driven approaches to support decision-making. 

A key strength of the Training School was its interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approach. Through teamwork and interaction with international experts, local authorities, and practitioners, participants developed district-specific proposals for the Island District, Hill District, and Market Gardeners’ District of Bamberg. Site visits allowed participants to connect theoretical concepts with real heritage challenges and ongoing local initiatives.

The Training School provided a unique platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and international networking, strengthening collaboration within the Go2CHANGE network while fostering innovative and heritage-sensitive responses to climate change. The final presentations demonstrated how scientific knowledge, digital tools, local expertise, and stakeholder engagement can be combined to support more resilient and sustainable futures for cultural heritage sites.
