Day 4 of the Go2CHANGE Training School in Bamberg explored climate change mitigation approaches for cultural heritage through a combination of lectures, digital tools and applied group work activities.

The morning sessions introduced key methodological frameworks supporting mitigation planning in heritage environments. Participants examined solar energy optimisation strategies supported by digital tools such as solar cadastres, alongside objective methodologies for assessing the feasibility of interventions. Discussions addressed net-zero emission targets, levels of intervention and the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approaches within heritage-sensitive contexts.

These frameworks were illustrated through a case study of the St. Pauli WWII Bunker in Hamburg, using the Application – Use – Identity (A-U-I) framework to identify risks and develop targeted mitigation strategies that respect heritage values.

The morning programme concluded with a QGIS workshop, strengthening the spatial dimension of climate mitigation analysis and supporting scenario-based evaluation through mapping tools.

In the afternoon session, participants joined an insightful lecture by fei eG, presenting practical perspectives on energy systems, innovation pathways and implementation strategies within heritage-sensitive environments.

The day continued with collaborative group work activities focused on refining district-specific mitigation strategies for the Bamberg Urban Living Lab. Participants presented their proposals and received collective feedback supporting the development of locally adaptable mitigation approaches.

The following day of the training school will focus on stakeholder engagement processes, inclusive climate action strategies and governance frameworks supporting climate-sensitive heritage management within the Urban Living Lab Bamberg. These activities are organised with the support of Juliana Strogan, Mesut Dinler, Simona von Eyb, Marianne Tauber, Fabio Bayro Kaiser and Rohit Jigyasu.
