Following the enthusiastic start to our collaborative journey, we are pleased to spotlight the core focus and recent progress of Working Groups 1 and 3. As we approach our meeting in Bamberg, these groups are already advancing the research and practical applications needed for resilient heritage management.
WG1: Climate Risk AssessmentFollowing its kickoff meeting on 20 March, WG1 is developing specialised methodologies to identify potential losses of cultural heritage values, such as authenticity and integrity, due to current and projected climate hazards. While general climate risk assessment tools already exist, adapting them to the specific needs of heritage sites remains a key challenge. WG1 aims to deliver a comprehensive toolbox that enables stakeholders to conduct effective, heritage-sensitive climate risk assessments and support better-informed adaptation and mitigation strategies.
WG3: Climate Change MitigationFollowing its kickoff meeting on 2 March, WG3 is investigating interventions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in heritage sites while preserving their cultural value. Finding the balance between low-carbon approaches and site conservation is central to the group’s work.
To turn theory into practice, WG3 has defined three key tasks within the Bamberg context:
Task 3.1: Renewable Energy and Nature-Based Solutions, Bamberg Gardeners’ District
Task 3.2: Near-Zero Refurbishment, Bamberg Island District
Task 3.3: 15-Minute City Concepts, Bamberg city-wide
